Baccarat as we have come to know it today wouldn’t be what it is if not for a few players who had an incredible and life-changing impact on the game. When trying to master the game of baccarat it’s a good idea to familiarize oneself with these players. After all, without them the game probably wouldn’t be what it is today. These are also the players who helped introduce the game to pop culture often in the form of films or books.
Some of the worlds most famous and celebrated baccarat players include Jackie Chan, Sean Connery as well as Michael Jordan. Jackie Chan even featured the game in several of his films. Then there is James Bond who, though fictional, helped make the game what it is today. But there are many other players who while they may not be A-list celebrities like Jackie Chan or Sean Connery they certainly should also be acknowledged. These are the players most serious beginners will most definitely have heard of. They’re the authorities in baccarat and are the go-to-people for players who are looking to improve their game.
Akio Kashiwagi is a player who is famous in baccarat circles for holding two records that seem rather contradictory. He is both the man credited with winning one the largest sums at a single sitting as well as losing an inordinate amount.
In 1990, Kashiwagi won $6 million at an Atlantic City Casino from a single bet of $200 000. Many couldn’t believe Kasiwagi’s luck and remained in awe of him. This however was only until he returned a few months later to the very same baccarat table in Atlantic City. This time Kashiwagi wasn’t so lucky. He lost $10 million that night. This shocking loss earned Kashiwagi the reputation as a big risk taker and the only baccarat player in the world to have won and lost such enormous sums in a single hand.
In 1990 he also got embroiled in a legal battle with another Atlantic City casino then owned by Donald Trump. Due to the dispute Kashiwagi left the casino with an estimated two million dollars worth of chips. At that point the veteran gambler had already lost a total of ten million dollars. According to Kashiwagi, the casino failed to honor their side of the agreement.
Kashiwagi was brutally murdered in January 1992 near his Mount Fujii home. The gambler was stabbed 150 times with a samurai sword. At the time of his death, the legal dispute between him and the Atlantic City Casino still hadn’t been resolved. He also still owned several casinos amounts totaling several million dollars.
Frank Scoblete is considered the go to guy for anything to do with casino games from baccarat to blackjack. He’s a highly experienced baccarat gambler and has written several books including Beat the Craps out of the Casinos, Golden Touch Blackjack Revolution as well as Beat the One-Armed Bandits. In total, he has written more than 15 expert books some under his pseudonym, King Scobe. He is one of the world’s most acclaimed and celebrated experts on casino games.
But there is more to Scoblette than gambling. He is also an accomplished scholar who has a Masters degree in history, philosophy and literature. His career path has also been unpredictable and started with him working as a writer, editor and even publisher. He even dabbled in a bit of theatre and has written a few book and restaurant reviews for some of New York’s top publications. He soon discovered that his real passion lies in gambling and has been making a living from it ever since.
Henry Tamburin is another gambling authority who has published several gambling books including Winning Baccarat Strategies and as well as Blackjack: Take the Money and Run. His books deal with concepts such as basic strategy, effective bankroll management, side bets as well as other advanced techniques. His expertise is certainly not limited. He has written on blackjack, craps as well as other casino games. He has published over 700 gambling articles and is often a guest lecturer on one or another aspect of gambling.
Tamburin’s expertise as a blackjack player is something he is well known for. He has gained a reputation as one of the best blackjack teacher in the USA. He regularly appears on a blackjack tournament known as Ultimate Blackjack Tour and is currently the editor of the Blackjack Insider newsletter.
Like Frank Scoblete, Tamburin didn’t know he wanted to become a gambling expert. In fact it was critics and not he who first started referring to him as an authority in the field. He has a degree in chemistry and until he retired, worked as a manager at a US-based chemical company for about 30 years. It was only after Tamburin retired that he really began to explore his interest in gambling. He then developed an interest in video poker.
Experienced and new baccarat players alike are likely to have encountered some of these famous names at some point. These are some of the most influential names in the baccarat and gambling industry in general. They have had a huge impact on the game, how it’s learnt and played.
For players who are serious about learning the game of baccarat a great place to start is with some of the books Scoblete and Tamburin have written. These will give any new comer the solid basis really needed to succeed as a baccarat player.
It’s true that most players will never have access to as much bankroll as Kashiwagi had at his disposable. But it’s important to approach any casino game with a level head. It’s best to avoid impulsiveness and only play with what one can afford to lose. Kashiwagi’s story is a lesson to all players that they should only take calculated risks.
If you stick with these guys you’ll have all you need to be ahead of the game in no time.
